A prisoner is sent to a labour camp in China’s desolate northwest during the country’s Cultural Revolution. Using his wit, and with the sole purpose of seeing a newsreel containing a glimpse of his daughter, he escapes and heads for the cinema in a local town. On the way he comes across a young vagabond who runs away with the enigmatic object.

DŽANG JIMOU/ Zhang Yimou
Zhang Yimou (1950) graduated at the Beijing Film Academy in 1982. After graduation, he worked as a cinematographer and actor. His first film, Red Sorghum (1988) won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. His next film, Ju Dou (1990), became China’s first film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The Story of Qiu Ju (1992) won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. In 1994, Zhang directed To Live which won the Grand Jury and Best Actor awards at the Cannes Film Festival. In the following years he continued to make internationally acclaimed films such as: Not One Less (1999) which brought him his second Golden Lion at the Venice, and The Road Home (1999) which won two awards at Berlinale: the Jury Grand Prix and Prize of the Ecumenical Jury. Zhang directed wuxia movie Hero (2002) which was the most expensive motion picture project in Chinese film history at that time, and later his second martial arts movie House of Flying Daggers (2004). In 2008, he was a director of the spectacular opening ceremonies of the 29th Olympic Games in Beijing.
