VORTEX

An older couple drink a toast to each other on the terrace of their flat. They would appear to be happy and healthy. But their quiet autumn days are slowly torn apart by an insiduous illness that causes Françoise to first get lost on the streets of Paris and soon in her own mind as well.

GASPAR NOE / Gaspar Noé

Visionary and tirelessly provocative filmmaker Gaspar Noé (Buenos Aires, 1963) studied film at the Louis Lumière National College (École nationale supérieure Louis-Lumière) in Paris. In 1991 his medium-length Carne won the SACD award at the Cannes Semaine de la Critque. In 1998 he participated in the same section with his first feature film, I Stand Alone, followed in 2002 by Irréversible, a competitor for the Palme d'Or, like Enter the Void (2009). He returned to Cannes out of competition, with Love (2015) and Lux Æterna (2019) and, as part of the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, with Climax (2018). Vortex (2021) premiered in the Cannes Premières section.

It feels like a more mature Noé has arrived, one who stays calmer and is less manipulative than Haneke was in Amour but with a similarly impactful ending.
