Mali, 1960. The youth of Bamako dance the twist to rock and roll music newly imported from the West and dream of political renewal. Samba, a young socialist, falls for spirited Lara during one of his missions to the bush. To escape her forced marriage, she secretly flees with him to the city. But Lara’s husband won’t let them be and the Revolution soon brings painful disillusions as they dream of a future together.

ROBERT GEDIGIJAN / ROBERT GUÉDIGUIAN
Committed filmmaker, Robert Guédiguian (1953), celebrates his home city of Marseille in his films and examines the history of those whom he calls, just as Victor Hugo did, “the poor”. His first feature films in the 80s and 90s, Last Summer (1981), Rouge Midi (1984) and ’Til Death Do Us Part (1995) were critically acclaimed. The public discovered him thanks to Marius and Jeannette (1997) which competed in Un Certain Regard at Cannes. Among the twenty or so films he directed are Journey to Armenia (2007), Lady Jane (2008) and The Snows of Kilimanjaro (2011). His latest films The House by the Sea (2017) and Gloria Mundi (2019) were critically and publicly acclaimed.
