Danish director Billie August (1948) attended the National Film School of Denmark in Stockholm, from where he graduated in cinematography. He is known for Pelle the Conqueror (1987), which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and later Golden Globe and Oscar for Best Foreign Film. For his feature film The Best Intentions (1992) won Cannes’ top prize for the second time. He is one of only nine directors from all over the world who has twice won the Palme d’Or at Cannes. During his four decades of successful career, he directed: The House of the Spirits (1993), Smilla’s Sense of Snow (1997), Les Misérables (1998), Goodbye Bafana (2007) and A Fortunate Man (2018).
