ILLUSIONS PERDUES / LOST ILLUSIONS

An adaptation of Honoré de Balzac’s novel Lost Illusions. Lucien de Rubempré, a young, lower-class poet and journalist, is madly in love with the baroness de Bargeton. The risk of scandal forces them to flee to Paris where they hope to live and love freely. Lucien soon finds rejection and loses the baroness’s support. He finds himself alone, penniless, hungry, and humiliated until the day he seeks revenge by writing controversial – yet banal – articles.

Xavier Giannoli (1972) has directed short films including L’interview (1998), with which he won the Palme d'Or for Best Short Film at the Festival de Cannes and the César in the same category. His first feature film Eager Bodies (2003) participated in New Directors at San Sebastian IFF. Among his following films were Only the Night (2005), The Singer (2006) and In the Beginning (2009), the latter two of which were contenders at Cannes. He has competed at Venice Festival with Superstar (2012), Marguerite (2015) and with his latest work Lost Illusions (2021).
