Johnny is an emotionally stunted and radio journalist who travels the country interviewing a variety of kids about their thoughts concerning their world and their future. When his sister asks him to look after her son Jesse, a Johhny embarks on a cross-country trip with his energetic nephew to show him life away from Los Angeles.

After getting his start making short films and music videos, Berkeley native Mike Mills (1966) made his feature debut with Thumbsucker (2005). He directed Christopher Plummer to a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award with his second feature, Beginners (2010), and with 20th Century Women (2016), garnered his own first Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Mills keeps things firmly grounded in real life, such that even the stylistic decision to shoot in black and white feels like an extension of his no-frills commitment to authenticity.
