January 2019. Filmmaker Karim Aïnouz decides to take a boat, cross the Mediterranean and embark on his first journey to Algeria. Accompanied by the memory of his mother, Iracema, and his camera, Aïnouz gives us a detailed account of the journey to his father’s homeland; from the sea crossing to his arrival in the Atlas Mountains in Kabylia in northern Algeria to his return. Interweaving present, past and future.

KARIM AJNUZ / KARIM AÏNOUZ

Born in 1966 in Fortaleza, Karim Aïnouz studied architecture in Brasília and cinema at New York University. His first feature Madame Satã (2002) was selected for Un Certain Regard at Cannes. Love for Sale (2006) and I Travel Because I Have to, I Come Back Because I Love You (2009), were both invited at the Orizzonti section of the Venice Festival and won a number of international awards. The Silver Cliff (2011) was presented at the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes. Invisible life (2019) won Cannes Un Certain Regard Award and then at the 48th FEST 2020 won the Belgrade winner for the Best Film in the Main Program.
