Through this film the filmmaker attempts to understand, humbly and retrospectively, his twin borther’s suicide at the age of 29. A family tragedy that he has never really recovered from, both a source of guilt and inspiration. Blengind excerpts from his films and conversations with people close to him, Bellocchio investigates this fraternal figure that never ceases to haunt his filmography.

MARKO BELOKIO / Marco Bellocchio

Marco Bellocchio (1939), after studying at the Dramatic Art Academy of Milan and the Experimental Cinema Centre, directs his first feature film, Fist in his Pocket (1965), awarded at the Festival of Locarno. Breaking with neo-realism, his politically-engaged works attack the Italian symbols of conformism; he denounces religion with In the Name of the Father (1971), and the army with Victory March (1976). He then passes from films deemed subversive, in the image of Devil in the Flesh (1986) which sparks a scandal in Cannes, to literary adaptations such as the Pirandello adaptation The Nanny (1990).
Marco Bellocchio troubles anew the Vatican with My Mother’s Smile (2002), selected by Cannes. He was the first to speak out about the assassination of Aldo Moro with Good Morning, Night (2004) screened at the Mostra and hailed by critics worldwide.

Kritike / Reveiws:

Straightforward in concept yet psychologically profound, the film draws the audience in with a lingering sadness made more potent by the director’s clear yet unspoken sense of guilt.
